Being a truly international university where 50% of all students are international students coming from 30 different countries and 60% of professors are English speakers from the USA and Canada, LCC International University wants to promote the use of English as a language for further studies as well as reward students who excel in their studies. LCC International University has partnered with schools in Eastern Europe since 2004 as we believe our University to be a great educational establishment for many future students. In our gratitude to our friendship with the schools and the Educational department, we present this competition as a way for students to be motivated to learn English well as this international language provides many opportunities for the future. A final motivation is the prize: the winners of each competition will be awarded a free trip to LCC International University in March where they will participate in the final round of the competition. Winners for similar competitions from Georgia, Ukraine, Russia, Latvia, Albania, Armenia, and Moldova will all meet at LCC in Klaipeda and the final winner will be selected. The winner will win a free semester at LCC International University. There will be many other prizes for the three best speakers, so that every student could feel motivated and encouraged by participating. THE THEME The theme for the competition is: Freedom and Confinement. The student can choose to interpret the theme in any way that they choose and have their own topic for their speech. PARTICIPATION Each school can delegate one participant and register him/her by filling out the form. We would strongly encourage schools to organize a public speaking competition in their schools in order to choose the best speaker. Participants must be students of the last two years in school. Registration deadline is January 31, 2017. The in country competitions will be held in February. The final competition will be held on March 29 at LCC International University in Klaipeda, Lithuania. THE SPEECH Participants will have to deliver a speech, the title and content of which will have to be connected with the theme for the competition in one or another way. Participants may interpret the theme in any way they wish, but may not use the theme as the title of their speech. Participants may be as creative as they can in interpretation of the theme because the judges will be looking for memorable speeches. Public speaking is more than just an act of speaking: it reveals personality, attitudes, general intelligence of the speaker, ability to concentrate, address the public, control one’s body and voice, and sustain positive atmosphere in the audience. The speech should not be longer than 5 minutes. THE PROCESS First Round During the competition Speakers will be divided into groups. Each group will have a maximum of 12 speakers, randomly assigned to each group. Speakers will speak in a random order. Speakers will deliver their 5 minute prepared speech which is connected with the theme for the competition. Speakers may not use any notes, props or visual aid. A timekeeper will give an audible signal at 4:30 minutes (to indicate that 30 seconds remain), at 5:00 minutes (to indicate that the participant’s time is up), and at 5:30 minutes (at which point the participant must conclude their speech immediately). The judges may ask questions at the end of the speech. Finals The number of speakers from each group selected for the finals by the judges will be two. Finalists will speak on the same theme and argument that they presented in the first round. The final speeches will be followed by a 3-4 minute question period. Questions may come from members of the audience or members of the judges‘ panel and participants should respond to each question individually. The Prize The winner of the competition in each country will win a trip to Lithuania in order to participate in the final round of the international competition. The final winner will win a free semester at LCC International University while the 2nd best speaker will win free participation at the Summer English language institute at LCC International University, Klaipėda, Lithuania.
